Florida is asking for yet another extension for its Medicaid waiver.
This marks the sixth time that the state has sought a waiver for the five-county Medicaid pilot program. The state and federal authorities have been negotiating for more than a year over the fate of the program.
The latest waiver request, which was dated Sept. 29, seeks to extend the current waiver until Oct. 15.
“Due to the critical nature of the funding, the state is requesting the extension of the current waiver and awaits final determination," reads the letter written by Justin Senior, acting deputy secretary of Medicaid for the Agency for Health Care Administration.
Florida has used the current Medicaid waiver to operate a five-county pilot program, but the state wants to extend the current waiver and use it as the framework for the statewide overhaul of Medicaid that state lawmakers passed earlier this year.
The latest extension request notes that the fate of the low-income pool (LIP) remains a key sticking point in the final negotiations. State officials already have said that the extension will require the state to implement medical loss ratios. The ratios are requirements that health maintenance organizations spend a certain amount of money on direct care.
LIP is a $1 billion annual allotment from the federal government that is used to help pays the costs of the underinsured and uninsured. Florida uses the majority of the money to reimburse hospitals that treat the uninsured and underinsured.
